Department of psychiatry

History of the department: The department of psychiatry, Government Medical College was established in the year March 2021 . Services started at new building Pollupali from November 2022.

Faculty:
1) Assistant professor -Dr. K .Munivel MD (Psychiatry)
2) Senior Resident- Dr. P. Swedha MD(psychiatry)
3) Senior Resident- Dr. C. Poongodi MD(psychiatry)

Objectives:

  • To provide tertiary Psychiatry care services.
    • To collaborate with primary and secondary care centers.
      • To excellence in teaching and training at UG and PG level .
        • To conduct research in the department of psychiatry.
          • To provide community level care in integration with District Mental Health Program (DMHP)

Clinical services:
Outpatient services: After registering at OP counter, patient’s are directed to psychiatry opd (207). Patient who visits Psychiatry opd for the first time , Patients, who were referred from primary and secondary care center’s and directed from other opd departments were evaluated. For follow up consultation, patient need to bring their old appointment slip.

Inpatient services :

20 beds are allotted for 10 male and 10 female cases
separately. Inpatient services given for Acute psychiatric illness ,drug abuse, Psychiatry emergencies like violent behaviour, suicide attempts. De-addiction treatment are provided in a appropriate manner.

Special clinics are conducted as following:
Monday – Suicide prevention clinic
Tuesday – Neuropsychiatry clinic
Wednesday – Neurosis clinic
Thursday- De-addiction clinic
Saturday – child and adolescent psychiatry clinic.

Other services:
We also provide services,
1) Emergency care and recovery Centre[ECRC] for wandering mentally ill patients.
2) Cognitive rehabilitation day Centre ,which is functioning in collaboration with neurology department.
3) Internet de-addiction Centre.
4) Postnatal psychosis counselling.
5) MAnanala NAllatharavu Mandram [MANAM]-Helpline services for stress management college students.

Liaison psychiatry:
Patients are given integrated services, in liaison with all the specialty
department wherever needed. In liaison with neuro department
neuropsychiatric disorders like delirium, Parkinson disease are treated . In liaison with District Early Integration Centre(DEIC)- child and adolescent psychiatry disorders are given speech and occupational therapy. In liaison with toxicology department – suicide attempts are assessed and given psychotherapy. In liaison with OG department – post partum illness are treated.

For post graduates : under DRP( District residential program)

  • Clinical cases, discussion, ward round discussion
  • Academic classes are provided
  • Clinical assessment done periodically

For under graduates :

  • Clinical discussion
  • Ward round discussion
  • Theory classes
  • Clinical assessment done periodically.

Research : Research on following topic is going on ,
1) Suicide attempt in rural and urban women : Does stress ,coping, social support differs.

Public awareness and education:
Important health days are celebrated to create awareness among public. In our department, World Mental Health day ( 10th October) , world suicide prevention day ( 10th September), world Autism day( April 2) was celebrated annually.
